Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for more than 20 years. She is also an accomplished public speech writer. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments discussing the depictions of females in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic who has won awards for her work, is an activist blogger. She is the founder and director-general of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit site that examines the representation of women within popular culture narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to targeted exploitation of women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet environment. Sarkeesian is a graduate in political thought and social theory from York University. She is also a highly-respected public speaking. Sarkeesian gave speeches to the TEDxWomen Festival as well as to the United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age she was intrigued by the issue of gender identity and feminist thinking. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to create an online series that examined the role of gender in games but was the target of a harassment campaign online. But the assault did be a deterrent, but it made her more determined to be a feminist media critic. She has won several awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of the media, and she founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit examines how women are depicted in popular culture of today.
